Luxury cottages in the highlands

Welcome to the largest region in Scotland: the Highlands! This is a famous area as it’s widely used as a movie setting. Think about the Hogwarts bridge from the famous Harry Potter movie, which is called the Glenfinnan Viaduct in real life. Visiting this bridge is a must, as it’s nicely tucked away in the charming Glenfinnan hamlet near Fort William. And in case you didn’t know, Fort William is a historical town named after a fort which was demolished. The only thing that's now left is the town of Fort William.

(Start the ultimate list of cottages in the Highlands)

luxury cottages in the highlands to rent

The reason why Fort William is so famous is that there's a mountain range nearby named the Nevis Range. It's only 7 miles away from Fort William. This range is home to the mountain Ben Nevis, which is the highest point in the UK. It's an excellent place to do winter sports as well. Fort William is named after Willem van Oranje, who then became king of Scotland during the 17th century by marrying Mary II of England.

The Highlands is in our opinion the best place to go when you visit Scotland. It’s filled with wonderful lochs, such as the well-known Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, Loch Morar, Loch Tay, Loch Awe, Loch Maree, and many more. Each loch has its own charm and is therefore unique. The gateway to the Highlands is through the town of Inverness. Mostly, tourists don't come for the town itself, but for its incredible surroundings and the Urquhart Castle. And not to mention they have the tastiest Highland whisky.

Are you ready to visit Scotland by staying in one of the best luxury cottages in the Highlands? We made a list of the 14 best cottages. At the top of our list are the most affordable cottages, and once you scroll down you will find the most expensive and luxurious ones. Enjoy!

In Glen Rest you can't avoid resting. Located in the Alladale Wilderness Reserve in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, you will find ultimate tranquillity and peace. The surroundings from here are one of the best of all the cottages in the Highlands. And this makes Glen Rest probably my favourite. 5. The Fortalice - Castle for rent in the Highlands

I can’t deny that this area looks incredible too. But we’ll talk about this house, first. Or is it a house? Because this is different from what we've seen before. The Fortalice is called an ancient castle. Inside, you'll taste the authenticity and find the most luxurious creature comforts. In order words: this castle still has its authentic charm, but at the same time, it offers brilliant comfort. I highly recommend the Fortalice for a wedding, as well. It has all the room for that and even a place inside to get married. With expansive inglenook fireplaces, exposed stone walls, beautiful antiques, and grand oil paintings, the Fortalice is truly something else.

The wooden pillars throughout the house combined with the white walls and hanging antlers make it look very nice to the eye as well.

How big is Highland Retreat? It's a three-bedroom cottage, nestled on Glen Alladale. Alladale is a wilderness reserve that truly makes you feel you got away from it all. This is a large but lovely town, and especially interesting for those who'd like to explore the history of the Vikings. Vikings from Northern Europe built a settlement in Thurso and in another town named Caithness.

Originally, The Dunnet estate was completed in 1906 by Admiral Sir Edwyn Alexander-Sinclair. He’s notable for firing the first shots of the Battle of Jutland. The estate has been in the hands of many more notable people. In 1948, it’s been purchased by Commander Clare and Lady Doris Vyner, a close friend of Elizabeth. She invited her to stay at the house in 1953 after the death of King George VI. The queen spotted Barrogill Castle from one of the upstairs windows, and later she decided to purchase it and rename it after the Castle of Mey. Well, that’s not something we all can do. ‘’Hey, I see a nice castle over there. I want to buy it.’’

loch ness mansion to rent

Loch Ness Mansion for rent

9. Loch Ness Mansion

This Loch Ness Mansion has, in our opinion, the best position on the shore of Loch Ness. This mansion is fantastic for families, too. It has all the amenities and entertainment to have a fantastic time: a pool table, a foosball table, room for al fresco dining, and more. So if you'd like to explore this historical, mysterious lake, then definitely have a look at the Loch Ness mansion. The views are incredible, both from the inside and on the outside (extraordinary views of Loch Ness from your bed, for example).

We all heard the story about the monster of Loch Ness. Was it there, and is it still there? The funny fact is that, over the years, many people thought differently. So do some people claim in the past that they saw, indeed, a kind of monster. Alexander Macdonald (1888) described it as ''a large stubby-legged animal''. Aldie Mackay (1933) described it as a ‘’whale-like fish’’. George Spicer (1933) said he saw ‘’a most extraordinary form of animal’’ cross the road in front of their car. A motorcyclist and veterinary student, Arthur Grant (1934), described it as a cross between a seal and a plesiosaur. He followed it to the loch, but only saw ripples. He nearly hit the creature on his motorbike.

And there are a lot more findings of people to be found on the internet. So it seems true that there has been ‘’something’’. But what it was exactly, is still not known. They suggest that the creature looks a lot like the extinct plesiosaur. They also suggested a long-neck newt. Anyway, the monster got the nickname ''Nessie''. To this day, there's no evidence found of a mythical beast. They know it's not a large scaly reptile, as well as a large fish or a catfish. But there's been a large amount of eel DNA found. High chance the monster of Loch Ness was an eel.
