Why are luxury lodges in the Highlands so popular? The magical, raw Highlands… It's a place where the power and peace of nature come together.

Did you that the SAS (highly skilled commandos from the UK) train survivability in the Highlands because of its challenging environment? Besides extreme hikers, the Highlands is also very enjoyable for recreational walking, family holidays, or a romantic trip.

In this article, I will show you the best lodges in the Highlands. The locations of these luxury lodges will create a memory you will never forget.

1. Camisky Lodge

We start the list with the Victorian-styled Camisky Lodge in Torlundy, Fort William. Originally, Camisky Lodge was built by Lord Abringer in 1870. He was an officer in the Crimean War and was also known for building Inverlochy Castle. The family used the lodge as a retreat where they can fish in the river Lochly

Camisky Lodge has one of the most breathtaking views I have ever witnessed. You’ll be looking at the Ben Nevis when you are enjoying your coffee and eggs in the morning. For supper, you can try to catch your food by fishing in the river in front of the house. Or… You could just buy your food and set the fish free. Not so much into fishing? No problem! There are beautiful hiking trails around the house and you are nearby wonderful areas like Fort William, Tobermory, and Cairngorms National Park. You can also try the 18-hole golf course at the Fort William Golf Club.

The lodge itself is very spacious and suitable for large groups. It’s a great place to celebrate the new year or Christmas. It has 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. The living area has a fireplace with comfortable couches to relax after a long walk. Camisky Lodge lets you experience the idea behind a lodge; remote, close to nature and having an active holiday.

Hilltop Lodge Aberfeldy Perthshire

2. Hilltop Lodge

You will find Hilltop Lodge on… well, the hilltop. On the hilltop overlooking Aberfeldy, Perthshire to be exact. I love the wooden design of this lodge. It blends perfectly with the surroundings and the interior becomes very warm and cozy. The best feature of this lodge? The view you have when you sit on the terrace. It’s arguably one of the best in the entire county. What a view… You are looking towards the river Tay and the surrounding mountains.

Inside the lodge, you'll find a very comfortable and modern design. The living room is my favorite part of the lodge. The owners bought a lovely L-shaped couch that is close to the fireplace. Perfect for relaxing after spending your time outside in beautiful nature. There is space for up to 8 people in the lodge. It makes the accommodation suited for special occasions, friend gatherings, or if you just love to have space and comfort. All the rooms are filled with spacious king-sized beds and have en-suite bathrooms.

If you like reading as I do, then you should definitely try the fire pit outside. Nothing beats the sound of fire whilst massaging the brains with literature. Or, you can just enjoy your favorite spirit and enjoy your loved ones. Hilltop Lodge is closely located to St. Andrews (a famous golf resort), Loch Lomond, and only 600m away from the cozy Aberfeldy. Here you can enjoy the many qualitative restaurants and coffee shops.

Durness Lodge in the Highlands

3. Durness Lodge

Beach or mountains? Hmm, it’s a tedious question. Well, not in this case! Why choose if you can have both? Durness Lodge is located at the Kyle of Durness which is a coastal inlet on the North coast of Scotland in the county of Sutherland. Within a few minutes, you can place your feet in the sand and follow the Kyle of Durness.

Scotland wouldn’t be Scotland if there was no rain. From time to time you could experience a little bit of rain. It’s a good thing that the Durness Lodge has its own cinema and game room. Honestly, this lodge is suitable for all seasons and long holidays. It’s great for families with kids and you can even bring your pet along. Durness Lodge used to be a hotel, but they renovated the place and made luxury stays of it. And you can tell because this lodge has everything. The owners thought about everything and you’ll have a very comfortable and pleasant stay.

And again… A cinema room! That is just a marvelous way to spend the night with your family or friends. The kitchen is complete with everything you need to cook a delicious dinner. And if the cinema and game room were not enough, there is also a sauna for 8 people. I highly recommend that you start your day with a sauna. It sets you in the right mood and stimulates the muscles. Durness Lodge has a unique location and a lot of entertainment options. It would be an experience you’ll never forget, so why wait?

Greystone Lodge in Cairngorm National Park

4. Greystone Lodge

Greystone Lodge has been around since 1793. Over the years, it has continuously been improved to function as a large holiday house. The owners made sure to keep the historical vibe of the place whilst adding more modern comfort. It has the right balance. It isn't our most luxurious stay ever, however, it has everything you need plus extras that truly benefit your holiday. For instance, there are 2.5 acres of private grounds around the property. It's fantastic for children and having a BBQ with your friends or relatives.

Greystone Lodge looks like a manor but it really is more like a spacious lodge. It always has been. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need. There is a smaller sitting area where you can enjoy breakfast if you don't feel like sitting in the large sitting area. It can also be used to separate the children and the elders if you want. The sunroom is a perfect spot for the dogs to relax and eat after their walks with you. The main sitting room has a classical style with a fireplace and classic furniture. Some people like it, and some people do not. I don't mind as long as I can sit after a long hike.

Greystone Lodge is located near the river Spey in Cairngorm National Park. Yes, you are actually staying within the national park. It offers tremendous activities all around you. From hiking to fishing, there is something for everybody. You could also go up north towards Inverness and visit one of the most magical cities in the UK. But if you don't feel like traveling much, no worries. Greystone Lodge and its private grounds are a wonderful place to stay at. You'll see wildlife all around you and might even stumble upon highland cows. Are you ready for a great family trip?

Royal Deeside Lodge in Scotland luxury lodge in the Highlands

5. Royal Deeside Lodge

Royal Deeside Lodge embodies the combination of rural nature and luxury. This is one of the most luxurious lodges in the Highlands. It's suitable for up to 20 guests and is often used for special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, or the celebration of business success. Royal Deeside Lodge is located in the wonderful area of Aberdeenshire. It has breathtaking views and beautiful rivers. It's one of the greenest areas in Scotland.

Royal Deeside Lodge is a modern, luxurious home with good beds and a stylish interior. It gives a very different vibe than the other lodges. You could say it kinda feels like a personal hotel for you and your family. Dinner and breakfast are included in the price and that means you'll have more time for your quests. The cuisine is top-notch and consists of fresh ingredients. The living room is spacious but has a nice, cozy feeling about it. This is mainly due to the wooden interior accents and the vintage fireplace. Outside, you’ll find a large area of private ground where the kids can play. Don't let them wander off too far though. There is a river close by with a strong current. And don't be surprised if you see a lot of unique wildlife e.g. golden eagles.

There are many activities close by (within a 30-minute drive), including 4x4 off-roading, and historic castle exploration like Craigievar Castle, and also don’t forget to soak up the cultural wisdom of Aberdeen. It’s a must-visit when you are in Scotland. For the kids, it's also great to just run around the property and you can bring your dog with you too. If you like hiking, there are multiple trails near Royal Deeside Lodge. Really, there are too many activities to name. That's why it's such a popular large-group holiday home.

Caledonian Lodge in the Highlands Luxury Castle

6. Caledonian Lodge

If money is no issue then Caledonian Lodge is the place to be. All of the luxury lodges in the Highlands had spectacular views, but it's nothing compared with Caledonian Lodge's. This is 'lodging' for the wealthy because you could easily mistake this lodge for a castle or manor. What I personally love about Caledonian Lodge is the diversity of nature. Beautiful rivers to follow, mountain trails to explore, and nature that’s just too beautiful to comprehend. This is an adventure of a LIFETIME!

Caledonian Lodge is suitable for up to 14 guests. It has a classy, castle-like feeling about it. I love it. The bedrooms are large with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms. No waiting in lines for a shower. Caledonian Lodge is fully catered and that leaves you with a lot of time to explore the beautiful surroundings, play a game of snooker, or hit the gym in the lodge. The Caledonian Lodge has proactive owners that can organize activities for you. Think about ranger-guided tours, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, and whisky tasting. End or start the day with a session in the sauna.

In my opinion, there really is no reason to go further than the 23,000 acres of the reserve. There is way too much beauty to witness to even think about exploring other parts of Scotland. But ok, if you want to (temporarily) leave heaven, try the following activities: visit the charming village of Ardgay or the famous Inverness to experience culture and local cuisine. But again… Why would you ever leave 23,000 acres of pure nature and beauty? What a place… IF you can afford it, then this is the best place in Scotland.

Unique features of Caledonian Lodge in the Highlands

  • Beautiful drawing room with fireplace
  • Gym
  • Sauna
  • Snooker room
  • Table tennis
  • Large king-size beds with en-suite bathrooms
  • Fully catered
  • Large parking area
  • Electrical car charging
