About Melrose, Scottish Borders
So, what about Melrose in the Scottish Borders? Is there anything special about this place? Quite frankly, a lot! It’s a small town in the Scottish Borders, however, it’s rich in history. Originally, Melrose was largely known because of its 6th-century monastery associated with St Cuthbert. It was later abandoned for a new monastery. Furthermore, you can find a roman fort near Melrose, legend says the hill next to Melrose is the place where King Arthur is buried, and Melrose Festival is quite a fun spectacle.
Melrose Abbey
After the first monastery was abandoned, Cistercian monks decided to build a new one further in the west. This monastery is known as Melrose Abbey. To this day, you can enjoy the majestic architecture of the place. Even though it's partly in ruins, Scotland History makes sure that the ruins stay intact and history is preserved. Melrose Abbey is a must-visit destination if you stay in Melrose. It shows a lot about the history of Scotland that is closely related to faith, division, and war.
Roman fort of Trimontium
A Roman fort in Scotland is extraordinary because the Romans feared the high north. They saw Scotland as unlivable with only rocks and harsh weather. Additionally, there lived fearsome barbarians and all of that combined wasn’t worth the trouble. Therefore, it’s extra special that a fort as large as Trimontium was constructed. It wasn’t for lack of trying to conquer the north. However, internal struggles in the senate and enemies all over the Roman empire made things difficult. The first use of Trimontium was a base of operations to conquer, but that quickly transformed into a fort for defensive purposes.
Melrose Festival
Every year in June, there is a festival organized named Melrose Festival. A local tradition and festival that lasts for a week to celebrate the town. There is music and every year a Melrosian and Queen are chosen. This includes a photo session at Melrose Abbey where the Melrosian and Queen are being photographed. The entire town is decorated and most people are wearing special badges shaped like flowers.
Final verdict
Waverley Castle Hotel is a great hotel if you are looking for affordability, amenities that you truly need, and a very good staff. The place is mostly modern, however, some parts of the hotel are a bit outdated and could use a makeover. But that doesn't take anything away from the experience because this hotel offers a very good quality-price ratio. I don't care about a little bit of outdated design as I'm not paying for that. I'm paying for a good bed, delicious food, and friendly staff. And that's exactly what you get.
