Western Isles Hotel restaurant

The hotel has an excellent restaurant that's open for both guests and people just looking for a place to eat. Previous guests are lyrical about the food and so am I. There is some lovely local cuisine to taste, but there is also plenty of other options. Western Isles Hotel is committed to sourcing most products locally and thereby lowering its carbon footprint. They also have a couple of great vegan dishes. The food at the hotel is very elegant and balanced. There has gone a great deal of thought into making the menu. Tobermory isn't a cheap place to do anything, to be honest. It's one of the most iconic and beautiful places in Scotland, and you pay for that. However, the Western Isles Hotel restaurant isn't extra expensive. It's in line with all the other restaurants in Tobermory, but it's quality-wise one of the better restaurants. If you are visiting Tobermory, then I strongly recommend eating at the Western Isles Hotel. The restaurant is facing the harbor and offers spectacular views while you eat your dinner.

Activities in Tobermory, the Isle of Mull

Tobermory is included in pretty much every travel guide about Scotland. And it is very obvious why it's featured a lot; it's simply too beautiful to ignore. It has a very remarkable architectural style with bright-colored houses (kind of reminds you of Copenhagen, Denmark) along the harbor. There are also plenty of activities to do at Tobery and the Isle of Mull as a whole. From Tobermory, you can go on boat trips, go further into Mull and discover its breathtaking nature, or simply wander through the marvelous streets of Tobermory itself.

Whale watching in Tobermory

One of the best things you can do in Tobermory is to jump on a boat and go for a trip whale watching. It's spectacular to witness the beauty and size of these amazing creatures. Multiple companies are offering whale-watching trips. You have to get a bit lucky, but if you spot the whales… Truly a memory that will stay with you for the rest of your life. One of the companies you could go with is Sea Life Surveys. They have been doing trips for over 30 years, so they know where to find whales, sharks, and dolphins.

Tobermory Distillery

And of course, your Scotland experience isn’t complete if you haven’t visited a whisky distillery. In 1797, the Tobermory Distillery was founded by John Sinclair. It has been around for decades and it has seen quite a bit of history. All of this is explained in the special visitors center of the Tobermory Distillery. Besides an interesting story, it's also just a very good whisky. I've shipped many bottles over the years because of their unique taste. Speaking of taste, if you want a tour through the facility and do some tasting, then I recommend signing up for a distillery tour with tasting.

Guided tours through the nature of the Isle of Mull

There are so many amazing spots to discover on Mull. It's impossible to find the gems without the expertise of someone familiar with the place for decades. That's why you should consider guided tours. The guides have lovely stories to tell about the places you visit, and you get to see those hidden spots only guides know. Absolutely lovely experience and highly recommended. If you want to do a guided tour, then Nature Scotland Guided Tours is a good choice.

Pros

  • Breathtaking views over the bay of Tobermory
  • Proactive, professional, and friendly staff
  • Dog-friendly hotel
  • Lovely local food
  • Historical landmark

Cons

  • Tobermory is expensive for some
  • The historical building isn’t for everyone

Conclusion: how good is the Western Isles Hotel?

The Western Isles Hotel in Tobermory is an excellent hotel to stay. It has very good staff, delicious local cuisine, and tremendous sea views. Some rooms are a bit outdated but they are renovating in a high pace. Furthermore, it doesn't bother me at all because it has a classical Scotland feeling. The things that should be good are good, the beds for instance are comfortable and there are en-suite bathrooms. Tobermory is famous and you pay a price for it. If you are a young couple without money, this might not be it for you. However, if you have a job, then it's perfectly affordable. Western Isles Hotel is in the same price range as the other hotels, however, their quality and service is a lot better. I rate this hotel 4 out of 5 stars.
